Newer versions of OPNsense fail to boot on my router hardware.  The solution is:

During installation/boot when you see the boot options, press the space bar.  Select 3 to set boot options then type the following:

set kern.vty=sc
boot

Add "kern.vty=sc" to the /boot/loader.conf.local file to make the change persist through reboots
